Variant n indicates that the ship’s hull number or hull designation and number appear in the dial.

Variant (n) indicates that the ship’s hull number or hull designation and number appear in the dial between parentheses.

The following cancel is classified as Type 2(n)

Variant n+

Variant n+ indicates that the ship’s hull number or hull designation and number appear in the dial and there is a hyphen between the hull designation and number.

The following cancel is classified as Type 2n+

Variant (n+)

Variant (n+) indicates that the ship’s hull number or hull designation and number appear in the dial between parentheses and there is a hyphen between the hull designation and number.

The following cancel is classified as Type 2-1(n+) (D1,USS) (FF)

Variant +

If the ship is only identified via its hull designation and number, then the n variant letter is not used. However, the + sign may be used if there is a hyphen between the hull designation and number.
