Transition to War: Pearl Harbor Ships before and after December 7, 1941
by: Lloyd Ferrell Date: 2024
This 10-frame Pearl Harbor exhibit was first shown in August 2024 at GASS in Hartford, Connecticut, receiving a Large Gold rating as well as a USCS award. It is presented here in the original layout, but as the exhibit continues to evolve there will be some changes made for showing at future shows.
Purpose and Scope To show the transition to war using examples of mail from Pearl Harbor Ships with postal facilities. Covers from before and after the attack are used with an emphasis on actual ship mail, but philatelic examples are also included. Pre-war examples are all from 1941, and wartime covers are mostly from 1942. Some are later, however, partly because a number of ships did not return to service until later in the war. This exhibit has pre-war covers for all 97 ships, and wartime examples from all that survived.
